Diagnostic importance of histochemical observations on the blood cells of sheep

Normal cytomorphological details of different blood cells have been described in domestic animals (Dellmann, 1993). The histochemical property of blood cells may help in diagnosis of various diseases like different types of leukemias and myeloproliferative disease (Cline, 1981). The blood smears made from the venous blood collected from the jugular vein of five sheep of 18-24 months of age were stained with toludine blue for muco polysacchrides (Bover, 1964), sudan black-B with saffaranine as counterstain for general lipids (Bover, 1964) and periodic acid schiffs (PAS) stain with hematoxylin as counter stain for glycogen (Bancroft and Stevens, 1977). The stained slides were examined under oil-immersion to record the histochemical reactivity in thedifferent blood cells.
