摘要

Papaya (Carica papaya L.) is widely distributed in tropical countries. In total world production of papaya, India ranks fourth contributing 4.5 lakh tonnes annually. Its fruits are recognized for papain, the proteolytic enzyme extensively used in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. Its cultivation is encountered with problems like heterozygosity, dioecious nature and susceptibility to a large number of viral diseases. These features impose considerable limitations on its improvement. And this is one of the major reasons for lack of true-to-type varieties. Clonal methods of propagation paves way for overcoming some of these difficulties. Hence, an experiment was conducted for rapid multiplication of CO-5 papaya through in-vitro techniques.
