Genetic variability for floral traits and yield attributes in tamarind.

The floral traits and yields of 30 genotypes of tamarind were studied in Panchamahal district, Gujarat, India, during 2003-05. The longest panicles were observed in CPT 13 and CPT 19 (15.10 cm for each). CPT 13 also had the longest pedicels (12.50 mm) and filaments (8.94 mm), and highest number of perfect flowers per panicle (19.5). Flower length (22.10 mm) and breadth (22.80 mm) were greatest in CPT 6. CPT 5 had the longest petals (16.14 mm). CPT 13 and CPT 26 registered the greatest petal breadth (7.94 and 8.69 mm, respectively). Sepal length (16.45 mm) and ovary length (8.45 mm) were greatest in CPT 18, whereas sepal breadth was greatest in CPT 26 (9.32 mm). CPT 10 and CPT 21 produced the longest stamen (18.39 mm) and pistil (16.45 mm), respectively. Fruit yield per tree was highest in CPT 20 (195 kg per tree). CPT 6, CPT 8, CPT 10, CPT 13, CPT 18, CPT 19, CPT 20 and CPT 22 were found to be the promising genotypes based on the evaluated traits.
