Effect of methods and dates of sowing on yield of green onion in under north Gujarat conditions

To catch the off-season market for green leaves onion (Allium cepa L), its sporadic cultivation is initiated in kharif by the farmers in the vicinity of urban area in north Gujarat. Production technology to raise onion during kharif season needs to begenerated to recommend to the farmers. The time of sowing exerts a distinct effect on growth and eventually on yield of onion. The optimum time of sowing is decided by several factors, the most important of which is the temperature during the growing season. Further, transplanting of seedlings or planting of small bulbs is labour intensive and involves either nursery raising or needs small bulbs for planting purpose. Direct seeding is also one of the methods to raise onion crop. The technology relatedto appropriate time of sowing as well as economically viable method of sowing for kharif season, to meet the supply of green onion during offseason is the need of the farmers. Keeping this in view, an experiment was planned to find out the appropriate time and method of sowing kharif onion.
