The present study was carried out during 2001 in Punjab, India, to determine the effect of different methods and rates of phosphorus (P) application on the growth of Populus deltoides seedlings in the nursery. Treatments consisted of 5 rates of P application: 0, 50, 100, 150 and 300 kg/ha, and 5 application methods: broadcasting, mixed in augerpits (15 cm diameter and 20 cm depth) before insertion in cuttings, placed at 5-cm depth in rows, 10 cm apart from the cutting line on both sides of the cutting line, and 20 cm apart from the other side of the cutting line. Among the various methods tested, the augerpit method of application recorded more plant growth. Application of 100 kg P2O5 ha-1 and above resulted in an increase in plant height compared with the control. Rates x methods interaction reflected a significant effect on plant growth. Treatment combinations of 100 kg P2O5/ha mixed in augerpits and the same rate placed at 5-cm depth in rows, 20 cm apart from the cutting line (on both sides of cuttings) produced plants of more height and diameter, respectively..
