Association and path analsyis among horticultural and seed traits in cabbage

Cabbage (Brassica oleraceavar. botrytis L.) is one of the most important vegetable crops of the world. In India, cabbage is grown over an area of 2,80,000 hectares with an annual production of 61,00,000 metric tonnes (3). In Himachal Pradesh, it is grown over an area of 2,250 hectares with an annual production of 72,225 metric tonnes. It is a major off-season crop for mid and high hills of H.P. and brings lucrative returns to the farmers. Cabbage thrives best in cool, humid climate and can tolerate severe frosts. Most of the cultivated varieties of cabbage are biennial and do not bolt unless they are exposed to cold temperature of 3-4 deg C for a period of 6-8 weeks (8) for ultimate seed set. Such conditions prevail in the dry temperate zone of Himachal Pradesh at Kalpa Valley which are quite congenial for the production of cabbage seed and seed production has become a thriving industry (7). Knowledge of inter-relationship among horticultural and seed traits is important in selecting genotypes forhigher seed yield. The present investigations were undertaken to study the association and path analysis among horticultural and seed traits during 2000-2001 and 2001-2002 under Nauni (Department of Vegetable Crops, Dr.YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, Solan) and Kalpa condition (Vegetable Research Station-Kalpa, Kinnaur) of Himachal Pradesh. The phenotypic and genotypic correlations and their direct and indirect effect helps to identify the attributes which exerts maximum influence on seed yield per plant in cabbage.
