Rootstock and scion interactions on certain growth characteristics in apple

In a composite tree, the two components, i.e. the rootstock and the scion, because of their different genetic constitution, exert a great degree of influence on each other affecting their performance throughout their life period. The inter-relationships or interactions between the scion and stock, the graft components of a compatible combinations, exhibit many interesting and valuable manifestations, some of which are of great value. For instance, the rootstock influences on scion tree size, precocity, productivity, fruit quality, resistance to pests and diseases, and adaptability to adverse soil and climatic conditions are highly useful and of great commercial utility,Tubes (7,8) observed that the effects of rootstock and scion on tree size were frequently, though not always, additive, and the influence of clonal tissue on tree size may differ when used as stock or as scion.
