Performance of different types of planting material in the rooting and establishment of bush pepper

Black pepper, the king of spices, is commercially propagated through runner shoots, which originate from basal portion of orthotropic shoots. The plants produced from runners are viny in growth, which need some sort of support to grow. Black pepper could also be grown in pots as bush pepper using rooted cuttings (Pillai and Chandy, 2). Methods to produce bush pepper from lateral cuttings were suggested by Ravindran et al. (4) and Geetha et al. (1). However, these methods did not give repeatable results under varying agroclimatic situations and only 10-20 per cent success is generally observed.
