Correlation and path coefficient analysis in paprika (Capsicum annuum L.)

Large and thick skinned peppers commonly known as paprika are rich in vitamin A, vitamin C and carotenoid pigment capsanthin which imparts red colour but contain low concentration of pungent principle capsaicin. More recently, oleoresin which permitsbetter distribution of colour and flavour in food is extracted form less pungent and high coloured paprika's is in great demand in the international market. In spite of economic importance and demand for high quality oleoresin with good pungency and goodcolour in international market, very little efforts have been done in the country and in the state to make it a remunerative enterprise. The sustained efforts are thus needed for genetic amelioration of this crop. Yield is a complex and polygenic character which is dependent on various components and is highly affected by environment and genotype x environmental interaction. Hence, information on association of component characters with yield and among themselves and the extent to which are influencedby environment should be known for making desired improvement in yield and quality traits. The present investigation was therefore, initiated to assess the association of important metric traits and path coefficient analysis in diverse paprika lines.
