This paper discusses the methods of phytoplankton cytometry that are most promising from the viewpoint of automation. The relationships are obtained that are needed for flow-through cytometry of phytoplankton on the basis of the reverse fluorescence signal of cellular chlorophyll. The block diagram of a system developed for flow-through cytometry of phytoplankton is described, and the results obtained when it is used are analyzed.
