EFFICIENT SYNTHESIS AND ANTIBACTERIAL ACTIVITY OF 2-(3-ARYL [1,8] NAPHTHYRIDIN-2-YL)-2,3-DIHYDRO-1H-BENZO [de] ISOQUINOLINE-1,3-DIONES

A simple, rapid and efficient protocol for the synthesis of 2-(3-aryl [1,8] naphthyridin-2-yl)-2,3-dihydro-1H-benzo[de] isoquinoline-1,3-diones 3 has been achieved by the reaction of 2-amino-3-aryl-1,8-naphthyridines 1 with 1,8-naphthalic anhydride 2 in the presence of catalytic amount of DMF in combination with microwave irradiation/in the presence of catalytic amount of PTSA by grinding in a mortar with pestle. The products are obtained in excellent yields with high purity. The structures of the compounds 3 were assigned on the basis of their spectral (IR, H-1 NMR and MS) and analytical data and screened for their antibacterial activity.
