Influence of weather parameters and vector population on incidence and development of sesamum phyllody.

Sesamum crop sown on 5 June in Ranchi, Bihar, India, recorded the highest incidence of phyllody [? a phytoplasmal disease] (28.6 and 26.5%) during kharif 2002/03 and 2003/04, respectively. A relatively lower disease incidence was recorded with advancement of date of sowing and maximum (15.0 and 15.1) leaf hopper vector (Orosius albicinctus [O. orientalis]) populations in the crop sown on 15 and 25 July, respectively. Significant positive correlation between phyllody incidence with maximum and minimum temperature and negative correlation with maximum relative humidity and rainy days were observed. Vector population was statistically non-significant and showed negative effect on phyllody incidence. Maximum temperature was negatively correlated while minimum relative humidity was positively correlated with vector population.
