ZEUXINELONGILABRIS (LINDL.) BENTH. EX HOOK. F. - ANEW DISTRIBUTIONAL RECORD OF ORCHIDACEAE FROM ORISSA

Anew distributional record of Zeuxine longilabris (Lindl.) Benth. ex Hook. f. of Ofissa is reported here.The southern most district of Orissa viz. Malkangiri was not adequately explored in the past owing to lack of proper tracks in the hilly terrain coupled with uncontrolled naxalite activities in this border district. This necessitated undertaking of intensive and extensive explorations to fill the gap for the flora ofOrissa. During such explorations, the authors came across an interesting orchid specimen of the genus Teuxine Lindl. from Chitrakonda hills ofMalkangiri district. Critical studies of the specimens revealed this to be Zeuxine longilabris (Lindl.) Benth. ex Hook, f., a species of Orchidaceae, hitherto unreported from Orissa. The identity of the specimen was confinned at CAL by comparing with the authentic specimens and the protologue. Thoughthe species is reported from the Eastern and Western Ghats of India, but not yet reported from Orissa (Haines, 1924, Saxena and Brahmam, 1994-1996 and Misra, 2004. A detailed description, photograph (Figs. 1 &2), pertinent notes etc. are given to facilitate easy identification of the Species.
