Performance of marjoram(Majorana hortensis Moench.)in Uttranchal Pradesh.

An investigation carried out in rainfed sub-temperate hills of Uttranchal with marjoram genotype(NIC23428)by planting at three spacings viz.,20 X 15 cm,30X25 cm and 30X30 cm during summer-spring of 2002-03 indicated that spacing of 20X15 cm gave maximum herbage and essential oil yields.Full bloom and pre-seed setting stage is the best time of harvesting for herbage and oil yields.GC analysis showed major components as : terpinen-4-ol(30.55%),(Z)-sabinene hydrate(16.86%),y-terpinene(6.37%),p-cymene(5.83%),sabinene(4.81%),alpha-terpineol(3.71%),(E)-sabinene hydrate(3.60),alpha-terpinene(2.67%)and linalyl acetate(2.41%).
