New selection of Ocimum sanctum: a rich source of methyl eugenol

Information on nature of genetic variability and degree of divergence of some quantitative and qualitative characters in sacred basil (Ocimum sanctum) could be helpful for efficient breeding programme and crop improvement (yield, oil content and resistant to biotic and abiotic stresses) through hybridisation. The natural variability needs to be studied and tapped for characterisation of elite germplasms having desired combination of characters. Therefore, an effort was made to screen the diversity in sacred basil based on flavours, appearance, fragrances and natural pigments and aromatic biomolecules which can offer opportunities for developing new ornamental, culinary, and industrial tulsi crop. Among selections, DOS-1 clearly indicated diversity with respect to leaf, oil yield and essential oil composition. Maximum leaf and oil yield (174.80g/plant and 0.53%, respectively) were observed in DOS-1. Similarly the maximum methyl eugenol and β-caryophyllene contents were also observed in DOS-1 (86.02% and 10.07%, respectively). Morphological as well as biochemical analysis observed that DOS-1 can be promoted for commercial exploitation and a livelihood support the local communities as well as bioprospection of biomolecules for industry.
