The paper presents an interleaved configuration of a hydraulicbuffer combined with a high-capacity deformation element which iscapable of absorbing a high energy of 1 MJ on occurrence of acollision.In addition, this configuration has a relatively compactoverall length. The buffer includes a novel high-strength housing anda simplified hydraulic cartidge .The deformation element is designedas a single-piece large-scale integrated component .Apart from anumber of technical benefits, the combination of the two componentsfeatures excellent LCC properties and offers outstanding value formoney. It can be used to good advantage on locomotives ,freightwagons or other rail vehicles with side buffers
