Resistant sources against Phytophthora blight in pigeonpea.

Some 739 germplasm, breeding lines, and selection of short-, medium- and long-duration pigeon peas were screened in a Phytophthora blight-sick field from 1999-2000 to 2004-05 in Uttar Pradesh, India. The test entries were sown in 5-m row length. Infector rows using Bahar cultivar were sown after every two test entries. UPAS 120 and Bahar were used as susceptible controls for comparing the disease pressure in the nursery. The results revealed 20 pigeon pea selections as moderately resistant to Phytophthora blight, showing <30% incidence while 51 germplasm, breeding lines and selection were tolerant (30.1-50.0% incidence). The remaining 668 lines were susceptible (>50% incidence). None of the pigeon pea lines were resistant (<10% disease incidence).
