Potentials of cruciferous residues in suppression of soil borne plant pathogens.

This paper discusses the application of cruciferous residues in the control of soil-borne plant pathogens, nematodes and weeds in India. Factors influencing the success of using cruciferous residues are described, including the choice of crop residue and cultivar, composition of pathogen complex, application time and method, amount and size of residue tissues. Limitations on the application of cruciferous residues are mentioned, such as their effects on beneficial microbes and phytotoxicity. It can be concluded that there exists great potentials in the use of cruciferous residues for suppression of soil borne plant pathogens as an alternative to expensive and environmentally hazardous chemical means of control.
