Ultrasound-guided transrectal biopsy of the prostate is a simple and safe procedure with low morbidity. Indications for biopsy include an abnormal digital rectal examination, hypoechoic areas on transrectal ultrasonography and an elevation of the serum prostate-specific antigen level. The use of 'predicted' prostate-specific antigen levels aids decisions about prostate biopsy.
