Leaf (brown) rust caused by Puccinia reconditai. sp. tritici (Rob. ex. Desm. f. sp. tritici Eriks. & Henn.) is recognized as an important disease of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) worldwide, causing significant yield losses over large geographical areas(5). Wheat cultivars often appear to lose their own resistance due to the cultivation in non-traditional areas or changes in virulence pattern of pathogens to mutate rapidly to overcome the effects of current resistance genes. Screening of a large number of genotypes, field-based assessment is used for partial resistance and can be assessed through different measures, viz. final rust severity, area under rust progress curve (6), infection rate (3) and coefficient of infection (7). High virulence variability of pathogen and introduction of high-yielding varieties coupled with high input technology, the disease has gained importance and has potential to change its status from minor to major disease in subtropics and intermediate zones of Jammu and Kashmir.
