Composition and antifungal activity of essential oil of leaves of Cinnamomum verum Presl.grown in Bangladesh

Leaves of Cinnamomum verum Presl.grown in Chittagong,on hydrodistillation yielded 1.25% (v/w) oil.Thirty five compounds representing 98.62% of the oil,analyzed by GC / MS,were identified.The major constituents were eugenol (72.54%),eugenyl acetate ( 10.0) and cinnamaldehyde (3.79).The oil possessed strong antifungal activity against seven phytopathogens tested.The minimum inhibitory concentration of the oil against Fusarium equiseti,Curvularia lunata and Alternaria alternata was found to be 250ppm followed by Drechslera oryzae,Macrophomina phaseolina and Botrydiplodia theobromae,750 ppm.Curvularia lunata showed greater resistance towards this oil and MIC was found to be 1500 ppm.
