Chemical constituents of volatile oil of seed bearing twigs from VitexnegundoLinn

The chemical composition of the volatile oil from seed bearing twigs of Vitex negundo Linn growing at Harara, District-Almora, Uttarakhand was determined by GC-MS. It indicated the presence of 22 compounds. 88.80% of the oil was identified. The major compounds were viridiflorol (26.86), β-caryophyllene (16.67, drimenol (21.93) and laurenene (8.0%). The seed bearing twigs contains higher amount of viridiflorol and β-caryophyllene than leaves. Drimenol is not reported in leaves but it was found in seed bearing twigs (21.93%). Thus it could be a better source of natural viridiflorol, β-caryophyllene and drimenol.
