AbstractThe new translational/angular accelerometer presented in this paper consists of a pair of identical preloaded quartz shear elements inside a metal housing. Integrated impedance converters transform the piezoelectric signals to low impedance voltages. The rugged sensor is mounted on the surface of the structure under test by fixing it with four screws. It allows the simultaneous measurement of translational and angular acceleration. Due to its construction, the small and light weight sensor is suited for shock application, e.g. during crashes. An example of linear and angular acceleration acting on a dummy head during a crash is presented.
