Seven guar cultivars (Krishna-51, B-53, Swati-55, Neelam-51, BM-83, Amul-51 and Pusa Nav Bahar) were evaluated for resistance to root rot caused by F. solani [Haematonectria haematococca] and R. solani [Thanatephorus cucumeris] in a pot experiment. Low to moderate (7-30%) pre-germination rot was observed in the plants of all cultivars raised in un-inoculated, sterilized soil. Swati-55, Neelam-51, BM-83, Krishna and B-53 exhibited less than 10% rotting, whereas Amul-51 showed 13% rotting. In Pusa Nav Bahar, the intensity of pre-germination rot varied according to the seed company (20.0, 20.5 and 30.0% for the local type, sample 1 and sample 2, respectively). Under inoculated conditions, the sample 1 seed lot of Pusa Nav Bahar showed a lower disease incidence than the local collection and sample 2 seed lot. The disease incidence in Swati-55, Neelam-51 and Amul-51 reached 41.1, 46.7 and 50.0%, respectively. Based on root rot incidence under inoculated conditions, Swati-55, Neelam-51, Amul-51, Krishna-51, B-53, BM-53 and Pusa Nav Bahar were considered susceptible.
