On the basis of a rate equation model, it is shown that the time constant for shorthyphen;pulse energy extraction fromallrotational levels in a CO2amplifier on a singleP(J) orR(J) transition is larger than the rotational relaxation time by about 1sol;kgr;(J,T), where kgr;(J,T) is the partition fraction of the transition levels at the temperatureT.
