In order to investigate the relation between the caudo-dorsal region of the preoptic nucleus and the pars nervosa of the pituitary gland inXenopus laevistadpoles, hypothalamic lesions were made by means of an electrocoagulation technique. Only lesions in the hypothalamus between optic chiasm and infundibular stem, by which the caudo-dorsal region of the preoptic nucleus was obliterated, resulted in a regression of the pars nervosa. It is concluded that the neurosecretory cells of this caudo-doreal region are responsible for the synthesis of the posterior lobe hormones.
