The clinical and radiological findings in 12 cases of hard metal disease in tool room grinders are described. Five were wholly employed in tool sharpening and 8 on a part-time basis. Autopsies were performed on 4, biopsies and autopsies in 2 and biopsy in 1. Pulmonary function studies were carried out in 8.The industrial process is briefly outlined and the literature reviewed. The toxicology of the metals is discussed.An account of the autopsy findings and the histological appearance of lung tissue obtained at autopsy and at biopsy will be the subject of another paper.
