A 16-year-old boy had pain in the lateral aspect of the right knee after he played two games of cricket. Examination revealed a tender firm mass along the posterolateral aspect of the right knee. Results of plain radiographs were normal. Bone scintigraphy showed hyperemia and increased uptake along the posterolateral margins of the right tibial plateau and across the fibula head. Ultrasound confirmed a fluid collection in the popliteus bursa and abnormal echogenicity from the popliteus tendon. Popliteus bursitis was diagnosed and treated by local anesthetic and corticosteroid injection into the bursa.
