A new property of metal/ceramic interfaces is introduced, which is the slope parameter of the work of adhesion as defined by the linear dependence of the work of adhesion of different liquid metals in contact with a ceramic on the electron density of the corresponding metals. Experimental results of the work of adhesion in various metal/ceramic systems are analysed, and the relationship between the work of adhesion slope parameter values for different ceramic materials and the bandgap energies of the ceramics is examined. Discussion of such a relationship allows the identification of the nature of interfacial bonding and interactions taking place between metals and ceramic materials ranging from conducting to insulating in nature.
