In today's environment, process cost reduction has taken on a greater meaning - survival. On one hand, increased competitive pressure is forcing metal finishers to look to new technologies and revamped processes in the quest for potential savings. On the other hand, there are some conventional operations such as masking that are simply taken for granted and not evaluated for possible improvement. Alternative masking methods such as UV curable masking resins, may not be glamorous, but they promise solid savings in a wide variety of applications and a range of shops sizes, without requiring large capital investment. This article has highlighted some of the potential savings in labor costs, time savings, and reduced rework. In addition to cost cutting opportunities, the new masking resins promise to improve the quality of the environment in the workplace, removing some health hazards as well.
