As Britain's Formula 1 fans converge on Silverstone for the weekend's excitement, the stories of poor ticket sales seem to be rather exaggerated. Last year was a bit of a disaster, with heavy rain and mud causing fans to be turned away during the weekend - a real no-no for any promoter. Some people are not returning for this reason. Others are not buying because there are no British drivers in the running for a victory, although you never know. In any case, from what I hear, the sales are just short of 90 per cent of last year's total, and I believe that corporate sales are up. The only thing is that some people are choosing less expensive tickets, which hints that the state of the economy isn't helping. Running a profitable F1 race without any public subsidies is a tough job, and Silverstone continues to look for a solution to find the investment it needs to push ahead with its plan to create new facilities that will generate more revenues each year.
