THE NEW PRIUS Plug-in is the most efficient version yet of the world's best-known hybrid, boasting 134.5mpg and CO_2 emissions of 49g/km. So how has Toyota managed to extract such impressive figures from the Prius? Cast your mind back a couple of summers to our drive of a Prius Plug-in development car. It was one of 600 being tested around the world to see how people responded to a Prius with a greater all-electric range and recharging capability. The feedback is in and it has been used to help create the production car tested here. The all-electric range of 15.5 miles (at speeds of up to 51mph) has been shaped mostly by the trials; about two-thirds of those involved covered no more than 12.5 miles per day.
