The total number of controlled drug (CD) items prescribed in NHS primary care in 2013 was 47 044 814. As GPs we have a duty to keep up-to-date on all aspects of CD management, including safe storage, record keeping, supply, administration and disposal. As a result of Harold Shipman's actions, a GP and serial killer who used CDs to kill his patients, governance arrangements for the use and management of CDs have been strengthened. Making errors in this area affects patient safety and could even lead to criminal proceedings for the individual involved. This article aims to outline a safe approach to situations where CDs affect clinical practice.
