Recently I have become just a little bit obsessed with the British motor industry and how we could recreate it. I've even had slightly mad thoughts about kick-starting manufacturing somewhere in the Midlands, but I know that's unrealistic. Shamefully, we haven't really had a British-owned mass manufacturing centre since the collapse of Phoenix in 2005, but there is room to encourage a slightly more diverse one. To that end, I recently replaced a crusty but utterly reliable Rover 800 from the old days with an equally old (but rather better-preserved) Jaguar Sovereign. So with 75 per cent of my fleet built in Blighty and even my Volvo V70's elusive offside door mirror carrying a 'Made in UK' stamp, I think I'm doing my bit.
