THE INDIAN CAR market has come a long way in the 26 years since Suzuki joined up with the country's government to form Maruti Suzuki. In 1982 it was worth 40,000 cars a year; now it has hit 1.5 million. And Maruti is about to give something small but very promising back to Suzuki in the shape of the new Alto. This 3.6m-long supermini will be known as the Maruti A-Star in India, and will be sold elsewhere, in similar form, with a Suzuki badge and as the Nissan Pixo.
