CO_2 outputs set to plummet: Manufacturers are racing to hit tough CO_2 targets for 2012 - and there will be consequences

The EU target of 130g/km of CO_2 for new cars next year is widely known. However, that target is an industry average. Every manufacturer has its own target based on the weight of its vehicles. Thanks to lobbying by German premium manufacturers, the heavier the cars, the more generous the target (and the lighter the car, the more stringent the target). So Mercedes-Benz has a target of around 143g/km, whereas Fiat, with lots of lightweight 500s, has a target of about 111g/km.
