A SMALL US company says it is close to commercialising a technique that harnesses a trickle charge from a plant or tree to operate a wireless sensor, overcoming one of the main obstacles to implementing large-scale sensor networks. The solution, based on work carried out at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, could help the US government reduce the billion dollars it spends every year on fighting forest fires.
