The newest addition to Autocar's fleet is the third-generation Skoda Octavia. A hatchback, it was delivered with 370 miles on the clock in straight-up showroom SE spec with the new turbocharged 1.4-litre engine driving a six-speed manual 'box. It's an all-new engine, good for 138bhp and 1841b ft from a diesel-ish 1500rpm. Skoda is claiming a combined fuel economy figure of 53.3mpg, which is highly impressive for a petrol engine in a big (4.7m-long) car. And it's even more so when you consider that it does without the cylinder deactivation technology available on some other Volkswagen Group models.
