Skoda Auto has passed many milestones since Volkswagen first got involved in 1991, and the original Octavia vRS (then branded simply 'RS' tested overleaf) that appeared a decade later was an important one. Part of a new generation of Skodas built on VW Group platforms, it stretched the brand into virgin territory - that of a hot hatch accomplished enough to swipe all five stars from our road test desk. Its "outrageous blend of space, pace, price and practicality" was marred only by muted steering and mediocre rear passenger room. Steve Horton of independent Skoda specialist Whitehill in Meopham, Kent, says he'd often sell used MM vRS Octavias to policemen who had driven them at work - surely another compelling endorsement.
