Our task of reviewing magnetic polarity stratigraphic research was made considerably easier by the publication of several recent review articles on various facets of the subject. Reviews of paleomagnetism of deep‐sea sediments have been presented by Opdyke (1977) and Harrison (1974). Larson and Helsley (1975) reviewed the Mesozoic geomagnetic reversal sequence.
