There is a pervading belief that this nation is on the brink of a nervous breakdown. It is thought by some that stress has reached epidemic levels and that the effect will be disastrous for our economy. This is questionable. What is certain is that stress is a very real issue affecting a large number of people and that GPs should be aware of it as a contributing factor in many illnesses-mental and physical. We should have strategies for dealing with it in ourselves, our patients, our colleagues and our employees.
