Having launched one of the leanest, most ingeniously efficient little cars ever to grace the planet in the Mini, the British Motor Corporation simply couldn't resist spoiling the purity of its concept with a return to its middle-class roots and the creation of a pair of absurd semi-luxury variations called Elf and Hornet. These oddballs were clearly planned early, because they popped up just two years after the Mini's 1959 debut, sporting the kind of chrome waterfall grilles that you'd find on a Daimler, a Rover, a Humber or just about any other upper British car bought by stiff-upper-lipped types.
