Petrol Mazdas to be EV clean: Mazda claims its petrol engines can be as efficient as plug-in hybrids and eventually pure electric cars

Mazda believes that it can improve the economy of purely petrol-powered models by up to 30 per cent in its next generation of models. That will enable pure petrol engines to match the real-world economy of plug-in hybrids, Mazda says. The improvement lies in equipping its petrol engines with diesel-like combustion technology. Its latest internal combustion engine technology is so efficient that Mazda claims it could even eclipse pure electric cars for well-to-wheel CO_2 emissions without adding expensive and heavy hybrid or plug-in hybrid components.
