Taigun set for production: Volkswagen is poised to give the green light to its Up-based baby SUV; could be on sale in 2016

Volkswagen has moved a step closer to joining the baby SUV ranks with the tabling of production plans for its compact Taigun. First shown as a concept at last year's Sao Paulo show, the front-wheel-drive Taigun has been conceived to slot in to VW's line-up two classes below the current Tiguan. The new entry-level SUV will carry a starting price of around ￡13,000 and be a rival to the similarly conceived Ford EcoSport. VW has also indicated that its third dedicated SUV after the Touareg and Tiguan will seek to provide buyers with a more distinctively styled and versatile alternative to a growing number of compact crossovers, including the Fiat Panda 4×4, Dacia Stepway and its own CrossUp - the latter of which is planned to reach the UK later this year.
