THE NEW POLO GTI is the latest in a line of fast Polos that began with the 1991 G40. However, despite the same engineers being responsible for a series of brilliant (and, admittedly, a couple of mediocre) Golf GTIs, no Polo has quite hit the mark in the same way as the Golfs. The Polo arrives a short time after the Seat Ibiza Cupra, and at about the same time as the new Skoda Fabia vRS (p37). Both use precisely the same powertrain as the Polo: a turbocharged and supercharged 1.4-litre petrol engine, mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox.
