Our original road test of the SLK in 2004 surmised that "the sports car just got sensible", not to mention a whole lot more enjoyable. The R171 SLK brought that desirable folding hard top and three-pointed star badge to the point that it could be uttered in the same breath as BMW's Z4 and Porsche's Boxster. Indeed, the range-topping SLK350 beat the Boxster and Z4 3.0 in an Autocar group test. Mighty scalps, and surprising given the non-enthusiast nature of the SLK's R170 predecessor.
