摘要

MIDSUMMER, 1783, SELBORNE: "Great honey-dew, blue mist, lusty gleams... The sun 'shorn of his beams', appears thro' the haze like the full moon," Gilbert White's daily notes on the turbulent weather in late i8th-century Hampshire are a caution and a consolation. Read them when you're overwhelmed by the thought of global warming, or despondent in an overdue spring, and you'll find the comfort of glimpsing continuity in change. Through his prismatic gaze, and a language as spare and resonant as a haiku(Japanese poetry), raw weather becomes something tangible, familiar, a drama we have all experienced, or will experience, life goes on, and round. The events of that June and July were the results of a massive volcanic eruption in Iceland, though Whitewas unaware of this. What was important for him was how they were expressed in the vivid and intimate nuances of life in his home village: "The sun, at noon... shed a rust-coloured light on the ground, and floors of rooms... All the time the heat was sointense that butcher's meat could hardly be eaten on the day after it was killed".
