Although it's no secret that, on occasion, Pentti Airikkala could be a fully paid-up member of the awkward squad, I will always remember him as Mr. Left Foot Braking - as the quite brilliant ex-rally driver from Finland who had a knowing, slightly disarming smile and who could do things with a Sierra Cosworth that would make your hair fall out. I met him only twice, but on both occasions he did things in, and said things about, cars that I will never forget. The first time was on a cold, grey November day on which I turned up at his left-foot braking school in Oxfordshire at the wheel of a brand new, bright red BMW M3. I thought that it would be the perfect car in which to be taught 'the art' by the master.
