Since 1976#x2013;77, economies have resulted in the price index of a new, low-cost house rising at a lower rate than the consumer price index or the price index of materials used in housebuilding. This paper suggests how further economies may be achieved, including simplifying detailed design, to reduce the on-site labour input. A procedure is described whereby manhour inputs, measured at the subelement and element levels of a dwelling, may be used to compare different designs in detail and so improve performance.
