Studies on growth dynamics of young natural crop of Pinus roxburghii in Tons valley of Uttaranchal.

A study was conducted to assess the growth performance of Chir pine (Pinus roxburghii) at four sites based on density, altitude, aspect and biotic pressure in Tons valley, Uttaranchal, India during April and May 2003. Site I-IV has an increasing trend of altitudinal range and a decreasing pattern of tree density (trees/ha). Results showed that maximum average collar diameter and crown development were recorded at site IV while minimum values were recorded at site I. Average height was also maximum at site IV but was minimum at site II. Results also showed that the number of growing shoots and their dimension was recorded maximum at site IV and minimum at site I. These indicate that at site IV, the young natural crop of Chir pine was more vigourous compared to other sites. Based on the observations recorded, it is concluded that Chir pine trees need growing space in which they compete for water, nutrient and light. Therefore, the density of young natural stands should be managed for improving the growing stock as well as for good quality seed production..
